Backpack Journalist
Since 2001, we have been preparing broadcasters for television.
But not just with a winning resume tape. American Broadcast Talent
knows that today's journalist must know how to "do it all" within a
newsroom. Have
your heard the terms "Backpack Journalist" or "One-Man Band".
These terms are synonymous with television news today.
Journalist's Today
Television broadcasters need to wear many hats.
This means knowing how to write, shoot, edit and even post work to the
web. If you don't have these skills before landing your first job,
chances are you will not end up employed.
News Directors Search For
News Directors hunt for candidates that are
multi-talented reporters, anchors, weathercaster and sportscasters.
And believe it or not
(ok you don't want to hear this)this is not just for small markets anymore. Many larger
markets now expect the same. If you wonder why you did not get that job
you applied for, chances are it went to someone that knows more than
you do about this industry. A person that knows how to write, shoot and edit will be
employed before a person that lacks these skills...especially in today's
job market.
Ask yourself these questions honestly:
1. Do I know how to edit
my own packages?
2. Can I shoot my own stories?
3. Can I write a package, vo, vo/sot or reader story?
If your answer is not absolutely yes to all, then this is the
time to step up to the plate and sharpen your skills. Trust us,
you will not find a job or be able to hold a job if you don't have these
talents.
American Broadcast Talent offers Editing, Shooting and Writing training
in addition to making a resume tape. You can schedule training at
the same time of your tape session or do it separately. See below
for details or call us at 407-443-5552 for more information.
Remember, these skills are just as important as your resume tape.
Editing
Training Learning how to edit for news is not that hard. It simply
takes a understanding of some basic rules and concepts. Maybe you
learned something about it in college or on your own. Many schools
fail to really prepare students regarding editing for TV news.
Newsrooms typically edit with Avid or Final Cut Pro or some similar
version. Nearly all editing at television stations is non-linear
(ok there are some tape-to-tape machines but that is quickly
disappearing). News Directors expect you to know how to edit
your packages, vo's, vo/sots or reader stories. Regardless if the
station uses Final Cut or Avid, the concepts are the same. Just
the pull-downs and things your need to click are different from program
to program. However editing is editing no matter what station
hires you.
American Broadcast Talent can prepare you to edit with our
Half-Day Training session. You will be trained by Randy Rauch who
has worked on air in television for over 20 years (see stories he edited
or right). You will get an introduction to non-linear
editing, ingesting video, understanding a timeline, using voice track,
working with soundbites and overall news editing.
This training will make you comfortable with editing and prepare you for
your job. You will be able to put on your resume that you know how
to edit and mean it! Those attending a resume tape session will be
able to edit some of their final resume tape during the training.
